The Heros of the 80s

The Last Starfighter was on television last night.



I forgot how cute this guy was. I also forgot how regular the heros of the 80's were. Before he is recruited to be the last Starfighter, this guy lives in a trailer park and plays arcade games all day long. Nowadays his character, if still poor, would probably be so poor he was homeless or something, or at least he would have to be a misunderstood genius. Maybe we'd have a whole side plot about his overcoming an addiction to heroin along with saving the universe. There's no way the story would be as simple, or as good, today.

Since when did being a regular guy, living in a trailer park, and playing arcade games become so bad? I miss the heros of the 80's.
